Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Exodus 16:24

And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

As there was before, Exo 16:20. So great a difference there is between the doing of a thing upon Gods command, and with his blessing, and the doing of the same thing against his will, and with his curse.

And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses bade,…. What was left of two omers a man, what they had neither baked nor boiled:

and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein, which was the case, when it was left or laid up on other days; and it showed that there was an interposition of divine Providence in the keeping of it to this day, and clearly confirmed it to be the will of God that this day should henceforward be to them the rest of the holy sabbath.

‘And they laid it up until the morning as Moses ordered them, and it did not smell nor was there any worm in it.’

When they laid up Manna for the seventh day it did not go bad. It may be that it had been cooked on the previous day and that that prevented this. (Cooking was certainly later forbidden on the Sabbath – Exo 35:3).

The preservation of the Manna, pure and sweet on the sabbath day, while on the other days if laid by it bred worms, and stank, plainly shows that it was not the effect of natural causes. And is there not a spiritual sense in this also, when our corrupt nature is preserved by divine grace? 1Pe 1:5 ; 1Co 5:6 .

Exo 16:24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

Ver. 24. Till the morning. ] The Sabbath morning, wherein it putrified not, but continued sound and savoury by the special hand of God; that they might keep the Sabbath, as it appears here they did before the law given at Sinai. Papists press the sanctification of the Sabbath as a mere human institution in religious worship. Our anti-Sabbatarians took this text for an anticipation only, and made little account of the fourth commandment, which Spalato had taught them was done away, &c.
