And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for a heritage: I [am] the LORD.
8. lifted up my hand ] i.e. sware; the expression being derived from the custom of raising the hand to heaven when taking an oath. So Num 14:30 (P), Deu 32:40 (the Song); and esp. in Eze 20:5-6; Eze 20:15; Eze 20:23; Eze 20:28; Eze 20:42; Eze 36:7; Eze 47:14; Psa 106:26 (misrendered in PBV. ‘against’). Also, with a different verb for ‘lift up,’ Gen 14:22. The reference is no doubt to Gen 24:7 J (cf. Exo 15:18 J).
heritage ] not the usual word ( na l h), but mrshh: elsewhere only Deu 33:4 (the Blessing), and in Eze 11:15; Eze 25:4; Eze 25:10; Eze 33:24; Eze 36:2-3; Eze 36:5.
I am Yahweh ] a solemn asseverative formula, closing a Divine utterance. It occurs with remarkable frequency in the ‘Law of Holiness’ (Leviticus 17-26), as Lev 18:5; Lev 18:21; Lev 19:12; Lev 19:14; Lev 19:16; Lev 19:18, &c.; sometimes also elsewhere in P, Exo 12:12; Exo 29:46 (with the addition of ‘their God’), Num 3:13; Num 3:41; Num 3:45. It is never found in J or E.

Verse 8. Which I did swear] nasathi eth yadi, I have lifted up my hand. The usual mode of making an appeal to God, and hence considered to be a form of swearing. It is thus that Isa 62:8 is to be understood: The Lord hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength.

swear. Hebrew “I lifted up mine hand”. Figure of speech Metonymy (of Adjunct). App-6. Act put for the thing accompanying it: rightly rendered “swear”. The Figure of speech Anthropopatheia is also involved in it.

swear: Heb. lift up my hand, The ancient mode of appealing to God was by lifting up the right hand, and was considered as a form of swearing. Hence yamin, in Hebrew the right hand, is in Arabic an oath, and as a verb, to take an oath. A similar custom prevailed among the heathens. See Virg. n. 1. xii. v. 196.
