And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye [are] true [men]; leave one of your brethren [here] with me, and take [food for] the famine of your households, and be gone:
33. corn for the famine of your houses ] The expression “take the famine of your houses” is so strange, that probably the word for “corn” is to be supplied, as in the parallel passage in Gen 42:19. It is supplied in the versions, LXX, Syr. Pesh. and Targ. Onk.: LXX = “the purchase of food for your house”; Lat. cibaria domibus vestris necessaria.

leave one of your brethren [here] with me; as an hostage; they do not say “bound in the prison”, Ge 42:19, as Joseph did, because they would not grieve their father, at least would not tell him of it at once, lest it should too much affect him:
and take [food for] the famine of your household, and be gone; that is, corn for the relief of their families, being distressed with a famine.

(33) Leave one of your brethren.While acknowledging that the lord of Egypt had spoken hard things with them, they do not mention that Simeon was left in bonds, nor even the harsher part of the treatment which they had met with, lest Jacob should be afraid to send Benjamin on their next visit.
