And the sons of Dan; Hushim.

23. sons ] Only one name is given. No list of Danites appears in 1 Chronicles 2-8.

Hushim ] In Num 26:42, Shuham. Hushim in 1Ch 8:8 belongs to Benjamin.

And the sons of Dan, Hushim. He had but one son, wherefore the plural is put for the singular, see Ge 46:7; Aben Ezra thinks he had two sons, and that one of them was dead, and therefore not mentioned; but the other way best accounts for the expression; though, as Schmidt observes, the plural may be indefinitely put, and the sense be this, as for the sons of Dan, there was only one, whose name was Hushim. Dan was a son of Jacob by Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, as the following was another.

Verses 23-25:

Of all Jacob’s wives, Bilhah gave him the fewest number of children. Only seven names are listed. The Scriptures give no explanation for this. It is suggested that this may have been a judgment upon Bilhah, for the incestuous relationship she had with Reuben (Ge 35:22; 1Ch 5:1).

(23) Dan has one son, Hushim, called Shuham in Num. 26:42. No genealogy of this tribe is given in Chronicles.
