Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Jeremiah 52:8

Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Jeremiah 52:8

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho; and all his army was scattered from him.

8. Lam 4:19 f. may perhaps refer to this, in which case the circumstances probably were these, that one body of Chaldaeans followed, and another laid wait in the plain. Cp. Eze 12:13.

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king,…. Not finding him in his palace, and being informed of his flight, and which way he took:

and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho:

[See comments on Jer 39:5];

and all his army was scattered from him; when they saw the enemy pursuing them, and near unto them, they left him, as Josephus q says, and shifted for themselves.

However, the Chaldeans caught up with Zedekiah and his soldiers in the plains of Jericho, and the soldiers abandoned their king either deliberately or out of necessity (Jer 21:7; Jer 32:4; Jer 34:21; Jer 37:17; Jer 38:23; Lam 4:19-20).
