Marys love and readiness to attend upon Christ, appeareth by a former story concerning her and her sister Martha, recorded Luk 10:38-40. But the present sorrow she was in for her dead brother, together with the hopes she conceived of having him restored to life by Christs coming, added wings to her motion; therefore the evangelist saith,
she arose quickly, and came to him.

Arose quickly (). First aorist (ingressive) passive of and intransitive. Naturally so on the sudden impulse of joy.
And went unto him ( ). Imperfect middle, possibly inchoative, started towards him, certainly picturing her as she was going.

Arose and came [ ] . The aorist, arose, marks the single, instantaneous act of rising. The imperfect, was coming, the progress towards Jesus.

1) “As soon as she heard that,” (ekeine de hos ekousen) “Then that one (Mary) when she heard,” the very moment she heard, she resolved to leave her grieving behind and obey the voice of her Lord; She resolved promptly and joyfully “not slothful in business,” Rom 14:11.
2) “She arose quickly,” (egeiretai tachu) “She rose up quickly,” sprang up with elation, gladness, and joy, to abandon her broken hearted grieving. Though Mary was the quiet one of the sisters, quiet ones often have great energies under adversities and in emergencies. She “made haste” to obey, as Zacchaeus had done at the Lord’s bidding, Luk 19:5.
3) “And came unto him.” (kai ercheto pros auton) “And approached him,” or came to Jesus, of her own volition or will, at His call, a thing every needy soul should do. She acted promptly, at the Master’s call or invitation, as every soul should do, Mat 11:28-30; Rev 22:17.

‘And she, when she heard it, quickly got up and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha met him. The Judaisers then, who were with her in the house and were comforting her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.’
When Mary learned that Jesus had arrived she went to Him immediately, followed discreetly by mourners who thought that she was going to the tomb. John wants us to know that they were witnesses to what followed.

Joh 11:29-31. As soon as she heard that, Mary no sooner heard the joyful news of the arrival of Jesus, than she arose, and went to him, without speaking a word to the company of friends, who, because she was of a softer disposition, paid especial attention to her grief; for they remained with her in the house after Martha was gone out; and when she went out, they followed her, fearing that she was going to the grave, to indulge her melancholy there: nay, they even wept with her, when they saw her weep, as she spake to Jesus, Joh 11:33. It was very customary with the ancients to retire to the sepulchres of their deceased friends, and weep there; and as those sepulchres were out of the town, and frequently near the road, it is probable that the place where Jesus stayed was near the sepulchre of Lazarus. The present circumstance tended also to the illustration of this miracle; for, by means hereof, the Jews who were come from Jerusalem were brought out to the grave, and made witnesses of the resurrection of Lazarus, who, probably, had they known that Mary was only gone out to meet Jesus, would not have accompanied her, through the hatred which they commonly bore to him.

Joh 11:29. And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him. Mark the characteristic touch in the words arose quickly (comp. Joh 11:20). Went unto, i.e., started on her way, for it is in Joh 11:32 that the actual coming is spoken of.

Mary responded to Jesus’ invitation to come to Him. This does not mean she became a believer in Him then. Nevertheless it seems clear that she did trust in Him at some time, as Martha did (cf. Mat 26:6-12; Mar 14:3-9).
