Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
12. Where is he? ] That strange ( ekeinos) Rabbi who perplexes us so much.
I know not ] This shews that he did not return to Jesus after he was healed ( Joh 9:7). ‘He said’ should be, He saith.

Verse 12. Where is he?] They had designed to seize and deliver him up to the Sanhedrin, as a violater of the law, because he had done this on the Sabbath day.

Then they said unto him, where is he?…. For Christ had withdrawn himself and was gone; whether on account of the Jews, who he knew would be irritated by this miracle, or whether to avoid all popular applause and glory, which he sought not, is not certain; it may be on both accounts: this question, however, was put, not out of good will to Christ, but that they might apprehend him, and bring him before the sanhedrim, for doing work on the sabbath day; and such enmity there is in carnal men, at the conversion of sinners, their acquaintance, instead of rejoicing at it:
he said I know not; for when he returned from the pool, Jesus was gone: and so it sometimes is, that when Christ has wrought a good work of grace upon the heart, he withdraws himself for a while, and the converted sinner knows not where he is.

12. Where is he? The motive for asking was not hostility, but a natural interest to see and know the author of such a work.
I know not The man had heard the voice but had never seen the person of his benefactor, until revealed. Joh 9:37. So we have not seen our Saviour; nor will, until his final coming.

And they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.-During the excitement produced by finding that the blind man could see Jesus had quietly withdrawn, the blind man knew not whither. [This question probably was asked out of curiosity. Those asking the question were the neighbors of the man born blind.]

While the man was going to the pool, Jesus passed on, so that up to the time of this questioning he had never seen his benefactor. The method Jesus took in this case served a purpose other than requiring the man to go wash in the pool and thus cooperate in his favor of being healed. It left him free to reason on the case without being prejudiced favorably by the appearance and personal presence of the one who had healed him. Under the circumstances, it was all the man could do to say he did not know where the person was then. We should bear in mind that all this conversation was between the man and the people who had no prejudice especially in the case, it not having been called to the attention of the Pharisees.
