So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
11. the city ] must be Gibeah.
knit together ] lit. united, associated, emphasizing the common action. The word is used in Eze 37:16; Eze 37:19 for the association of the tribes, and another form of it on Maccabaean coins to denote (prob.) the community of the Jews; NSI. , p. 354.

knit together as one man; went heart and hand together, united in their sentiments and resolutions, determining to have justice done, or lose their lives in this cause: according to the Jews e, this was on the twenty third of Shebet, which answers to part of January and part of February, on which day a fast was kept on this account.

(11) Knit together as one man.The Hebrew word for knit together (marg., fellows) is chabeerim. It means that they were all as united as if they belonged to one cheber, or club. It is the spirit of clubbism (Greek, Tcupcfa), displayed in this instance in a good cause.

“All the men of Israel.” That is all who had gathered. The army was gathered as agreed, and they were all one in their aims. This was probably most unusual for the tribal confederation, and this incident and its result may well have acted to give the confederation a unity that it had previously lacked.

Ver. 11. Knit together as one man. ] Heb., Fellows: resolved to live and die together. The strength of an army is in unity: as the strength of a whale consisteth much in the close knitting of his joints together; one member is tied to another; Job 41:7-8 ; Job 41:14 whence also he is called Leviathan, of Lavah, which signifieth to join, to couple, and to stick together.
