Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Judges 6:9

And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

9. that oppressed you ] See on Jdg 2:18; and drave them out cf. Exo 34:11 JE, Jos 24:18 E. Jdg 6:8-9 are repeated in 1Sa 10:18, possibly copied from here.

The aim of Jdg 6:7-10 is to enforce the principle that reformation must precede deliverance. But the prophet has hardly reached this point when his speech is abruptly broken off, and one of the main narratives begins (11 24). These verses must be earlier than the Dtc. compiler, who would not have curtailed the speech had he inserted it himself. They seem to be the handiwork of the Elohistic school; thus because of in Jdg 6:7 (an uncommon expression in Hebr.), cf. Gen 21:11; Gen 21:25, Num 12:1 etc. E; brought you up from Egypt Jdg 6:8, cf. Gen 46:4; Gen 50:24, Jos 24:17 E (also in J); from the house of bondage Jdg 6:8, cf. Exo 13:3; Exo 13:14 JE, Exo 20:2 E, Jos 24:17 E (also in D); the Amorites Jdg 6:9, cf. Gen 15:16, Num 21:13; Num 21:21; Num 21:31, Jos 24:8; Jos 24:15; Jos 24:18 etc. E, and see Jdg 1:34 n. The parallels with Jos 24:15-20 are particularly noticeable.

And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians,…. Even after they were brought out of Egypt, when the Egyptians pursued after them, and overtook them at the Red sea; where they were in the utmost distress, and the Lord wrought salvation for them, gave them a passage through it, and destroyed the Egyptians in it:

and out of the hand of all that oppressed you: the Amalekites who made war with them at Rephidim, Sihon, and Og, kings of the Amorites, who came out to fight with them, and oppose their passage through their land into Canaan, and the kings of the Canaanites also, who combined against them:

and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land: not only the land of Sihon and Og, but the whole land of Canaan, out of which more properly the inhabitants of it may be said to be driven.

Observe how by the ministry of a prophet, the Lord makes way for the salvation of his people. And is not God doing so now? Doth he not by the word of the gospel call upon sinners to return? Is he not by yet an higher messenger, even the Holy Ghost himself, preparing the heart for the cordial reception of Jesus? Oh! thou Holy Spirit, thou Almighty Teacher! how art thou unceasingly pleading and expostulating with the hearts of thy people, to endear to them Jesus? Reader, are you a backslider from the Lord? have you been brought out of spiritual Egypt? And have you since that great and distinguishing mercy, forgotten the Lord God of your fathers? Surely if so, you will feel the great mercy of God in a personal application of what is here said. Is this the kindness to thy friend? 2Sa 16:17 .
