That the cruelty done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come,…. That vengeance might come on the authors of it; so things were ordered in Providence that this might come to pass:
and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; be charged to his account, and he suffer for shedding it:
and upon the men of Shechem which aided him in killing of his brethren; by giving him money to hire men to go with him to do it, and perhaps by words encouraging the assassins, and who might be of the city of Shechem.

‘ That the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and that their blood might be laid, on Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and on the men of Shechem who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.’
The reason the evil spirit’s activity was allowed and even encouraged was so that vengeance might be gained on Abimelech in accordance with the curse of Jotham and of Yahweh.
“Seventy sons”. A round number indicating all the slain and stressing their acceptance with Yahweh (seven intensified). ‘Jerubbaal’ is now used constantly to indicate that Abimelech was mixed up with and followed Baal. All were guilty, both the murderers and those who encouraged it.

One general observation runs through the whole of this history, and meets the Reader in every part of it: namely, that God’s judgments, sooner or later, overtake the sinner. The Shechemites are first punished by the apparent victory of Abimelech, but this victory only becomes the prelude to the death of Abimelech: so that both fall by the just judgment of Almighty God. So true and final is that solemn sentence of God: Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made he man. Gen 9:6 .

Accessories will be reckoned with, as well as principals, in that and other sins. The Shechemites, who countenanced Abimelech’s pretensions, aided and abetted him in his bloody project, and avowed the fact by making him king after he had done it, must fall with him, fall by him, and fall first. Those that combine together to do wickedly, are justly dashed in pieces one against another. Blood cannot be a lasting cement to any interest.
