Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Leviticus 4:35

And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonement for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.

35. upon the offerings ] ‘after the manner of’ R.V. mg. Either the portions are to be burnt upon the remains of sacrifices already offered, or in the same way as other fire-offerings.

Shall burn them, i.e. the fat; but he useth the plural number, because the fat was of several kinds, as we saw Lev 4:8,9.

According to the offerings made by fire; Heb. upon the offerings, together with them, or after them; because the burnt-offerings were to have the first place. See Poole “Lev 3:5“.

35. it shall be forgiven himNoneof these sacrifices possessed any intrinsic value sufficient to freethe conscience of the sinner from the pollution of guilt, or toobtain his pardon from God; but they gave a formal deliverance from asecular penalty (Heb 9:13;Heb 9:14); and they werefigurative representations of the full and perfect sin offering whichwas to be made by Christ.

(35) According to the offerings made by fire.Better, upon the offerings made by fire. As the daily morning sacrifice was offered first every day, and as it continued burning on the altar all the forenoon, no fresh or special fire was to be kindled for it, but it was to be upon the fire sacrifices which had already been placed there before. (See Lev. 3:5; Lev. 5:12.) The flesh of the sin offering, both for the prince and for the individual members of the community, was not burnt without the camp, as was the case with the flesh of the sacrifice for the high priest and for the whole congregation, but was the perquisite of the priests, and was eaten by them (Lev. 6:26-30). This is in harmony with the law. The sinner who brought the sin offering could not partake of it. Hence the priest was not permitted to eat of the flesh of the sin offering which he offered for himself, or of the flesh of the congregational sin offering, because he was a member of the congregation.

Lev 4:35. It shall be forgiven him The great design of sin-offerings, says one, was to imprint the remembrance of guilt upon the heart; and to preserve from offending for the future. The words according to, upon, or with, says Dr. Beaumont, have reference either to the fat of the peace-offering, according as that was burned; or to the daily burnt-offering, which was first offered; and other sacrifices after, and, as it were, upon, or with the same.

REFLECTIONS.The offering of a private person resembles the ruler’s, save that he may use a lamb or a kid, and it must be a female instead of a male. Note; 1. No sinner is so little as to be overlooked, or so great as to be excused. 2. All alike (we can hardly too often repeat it) need the atoning blood of Christ. 3. Every application to Christ for pardon of sin, lays an obligation upon us to forsake sin. 4. The sense of the desert of sin will affect our hearts with deep sorrow for it. The tears of penitence should always mingle with the blood of atonement.

REFLECTIONS

How beautiful is it to behold the LORD JESUS thus set forth by the HOLY GHOST to the view of the church, under that grand and important part of his divine character our great high priest. But how equally beautiful is it to observe at the same time, what an everlasting distinction the blessed SPIRIT hath drawn between JESUS and all his types, in his servants. Here under the law, as an apostle truly saith, we see men that have infirmity, made high priests: but under the gospel, the word of the oath which was since the law, maketh the SON who is consecrated forevermore.

Here Reader! let you and I pause over those solemn representations. Here let us behold the great evil of sin, which alike in priest, and in people, among the rulers and the poor, exposes all without distinction, to the just and merited punishment of Almighty GOD. Is your heart, like my heart, under a deep sense of sin, and the consciousness of deserved wrath, prompted to ask with him of old, Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the High GOD? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, or give the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Oh! how infinitely precious, to every truly awakened heart that is asking the way of salvation, in those anxious enquiries, is that soul-reviving answer; Behold the LAMB of GOD which taketh away the sins of the world. Dearest JESUS! may I know by the sweet application of the HOLY GHOST’s work in my heart, that thou hast taken away my sin, and art become the LORD my righteousness.
