(14) The chief of the people.Some of the names are personal, some belong to families, some represent places, and some are independent. Comparing the list with Ezra 2, we find that years had added to the number of the houses.

14. Parosh, Pahath-moab, Elam These and other names in this list are identical with names found in the list of those who returned from the captivity nearly a hundred years before. Ezra ii; Nehemiah 7. Thus in many houses ancestral names were perpetuated in the children. But we are not to suppose that the persons named in this list were identical with those of the same names in the older list of Ezra 2.

Of these names thirteen are found in the list of clans of returnees with Sheshbazzar and Zerubbabel in chapter 7 (Ezra 2). These names therefore include the leaders of those clans. The remainder would be leaders of sub-clans into which the unmentioned clans of returnees were divided, or clans which had arrived subsequently, or leading city elders.
