I will also clothe her priests with salvation: and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

16. Her priests also will I clothe with salvation ] The correlative of righteousness in Psa 132:9. He will prosper those who minister faithfully. Cp. Isa 61:10. Health in P.B.V. is an archaism for healing, deliverance, salvation. Cp. Psa 67:2.

I will also clothe her priests with salvation – See the notes at Psa 132:9, where – instead of the word which in 2Ch 6:41, as here, is salvation, we find the word righteousness. The promise here corresponds to the prayer in Psa 132:9. It is a reason why God should interpose. What they prayed for Psa 132:9, had been expressly promised, and that promise is now urged as a plea why the prayer should be granted.

And her saints shall shout aloud for joy – See Psa 132:9. In 2Ch 6:41 the prayer is, And let thy saints rejoice in goodness. The sense is not materially varied. The Hebrew is, And let thy saints rejoicing rejoice; that is, let them shout, shout; let them be full of joy.

I.
The Promiser I: that is, the Lord; the most true, the most constant, the most powerful God; most true and sincere in the declaration of His purpose, meet constant and immutable in the prosecution, most powerful and uncontrollable in the perfect execution thereof. These glorious attributes and perfections of His, so often celebrated in Holy Writ, do ground our reliance on all Gods promises, and do oblige us, notwithstanding the greatest improbabilities or difficulties objected, to believe the infallible performance of this.


II.
The persons whom the promise mainly regards.

1. Priests; that is, persons peculiarly devoted to, and employed in, sacred matters; distinguished expressly from the poor (that is, other meek and humble persons); and from the saints (that is, all other good and religious men).

2. Her priests; that is, the priests of Zion: of that Zion which the Lord hath chosen; which He hath desired for His permanent habitation; which He hath resolved to rest and reside in for ever. Whence it plainly enough follows that the priests and pastors of the Christian Church are hereby, if not solely, yet principally designed.


III.
The matter of the promise. I will clothe, etc. The least we can imagine here promised to the priests of Zion, will comprehend these three things.

1. A free and safe condition of life: that they be not exposed to continual dangers of ruin; of miserable sufferance or remediless injury: that the benefits of peace, and law, and public protection shall particularly appertain to them.

2. A provision of competent subsistence for them: that their condition of life be not wholly necessitous, or very penurious; but that they shall be furnished with such reasonable supplies as are requisite to encourage them in the cheerful performance of their duty.

3. A suitable degree of respect, and so high a station among men, as may commend them to general esteem, and vindicate them from contempt.


IV.
The reasons.

1. Gods honour is concerned in the safe, comfortable, and honourable estate of His priests; and that on account of those manifold relations, whereby they stand allied, appropriated, and devoted to Himself. They are in a peculiar manner His servants, stewards, ambassadors, co-workers, etc.

2. The good of the Church requires that the priesthood be well protected, well provided for, and well regarded.

3. Common equity requires this. Is there any office more laborious, more vexatious than theirs; accompanied with more wearisome toil, more solicitous care, more tedious attendance? (Isaac Barrow, D. D.)

Verse 16. I will also clothe her priests] All Christian ministers, with salvation; this shall appear in all their conduct. Salvation – redemption from all sin through the blood of the Lamb, shall be their great and universal message.

I will also clothe her priests with salvation,…. With the garments of salvation, as the Targum; in answer to the petition,

Ps 132:9; but more is promised than prayed for, “salvation” including “righteousness” and all other blessings; and may be interpreted, as there, either of the ministers of the Gospel clothed with the doctrine of salvation by Christ, coming forth full fraught with it, openly publishing and proclaiming it; salvation being made public and manifest by them as a garment, as Aben Ezra observes: moreover Gospel ministers are instruments of saving others; the Gospel preached by them being the power of God unto salvation, as well as they themselves are saved in the same way, 1Ti 4:16; besides, they are kept by the power of God, and in the hands of Christ, who protects them, and as it were covers them with the garment of salvation, while they are publishing it to the world, to whose reproaches and insults they are exposed: or else this may be interpreted of the people of God in common, who are all kings and priests to God, and are all clothed with the garments of salvation,

Isa 61:10. Salvation by Christ is brought near to them, is applied to them, and put upon them as a garment; it is from Christ, and without them, though upon them; it is their clothing and their ornament, as well as their security from sin, law, death, and hell; see Ps 149:4;

and her saints shall shout aloud for joy; not only “shout”, as is entreated, Ps 132:9; but “shout aloud”; it shall be a jubilee time with them on account of the Gospel of salvation, the joyful sound sounded in their ears by the ministers of it clothed with it; and on account of the salvation itself, so great, so suitable, so free, so complete and full, and in which the glory of God is so much displayed; and on account of the application of it to themselves, being clothed with it and possessed of the joys of it. These the Jewish writers generally understand of the Levites.
