Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt.
2. The whole verse is a repetition, with variations, of Psa 35:4; Psa 35:26 (cp. Psa 38:12); and Psa 35:3-5 recall Psa 35:21 ; Psa 35:25 ; Psa 35:27 ; Psa 35:10, of the same Psalm.
that seek after my soul ] Or, that seek my life. The text of Psa 40:13 is fuller, ‘Let them be confounded together my life to destroy it.’
let them be turned backward &c.] Render with R.V.,
Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonour
That delight In my hurt.
With the last line contrast Psa 35:27.

Let them be ashamed and confounded that seek after my soul – The only change here from Psa 40:14, is the omission of the word together which occurs there, and the omission of the words to destroy it.
Let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my hurt – This corresponds in the Hebrew entirely with Psa 40:14.
