Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Revelation 3:13

Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Revelation 3:13

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

This we have met with at the close of every epistle: See Poole on “Rev 3:7“.

Those who think these churches were typical, and the matter of the epistles not only didactic and corrective, but prophetical, say, this church of Philadelphia was a type of all gospel churches which were to be in the world upon the Reformation; which more perfectly cast off antichrist, and would allow no key but that of the house of David, reforming themselves strictly according to the rule of the word, not according to state policy, and prudence.

1) “He that hath an ear, let him hear,” (ho echon ous akousato) “The one having an ear (to hear) capable of hearing, let him hear,” give attention, give heed to, or obey. This indicates personal accountability to God, to every man, no matter what others do, Rev 3:22; Luk 14:35.

2) “What the spirit saith unto the churches,” (ti to pneuma legei tais ekklesiais) “What the Spirit says to the churches; one that is clearly, factually stated, again and again to the churches, is that the Holy Spirit speaks to them, as surely as he empowers them. This he does in a special way and manner that he does not instruct and empower those without the churches, Rev 3:6; Rev 3:22; Rev 22:16-17. It is clear in the scriptures that the Holy Spirit speaks to (addresses) both the unsaved and the saved thru the church, in this age Pro 1:22-30; 2Co 6:2; Heb 3:7; Joh 16:7-11; Joh 16:13.

‘He who has an ear let him hear, what the Spirit is saying or the churches.’

And once again Jesus tells us, ‘he who has an ear to hear, let him hear’. The constant repetition demonstrates how important and urgent it is.

13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

Ver. 14:. And unto the angel ] Archippus, it may be; for he was a pastor here, and began to cool long before this,Col 4:17Col 4:17 .

These things saith the Amen ] The God of Amen, as Isaiah calleth him, faithful in performing his promises to the remnant that he reserved in this lukewarm Church, among so careless a multitude. To these Christ became a beginning of the creation of God; so the new birth is here called, as being of no less fame and wonder than the making of the world.

This is again the close and conclusion of this, as it was before of all the epistles, in which Christ calls upon all persons to hear and consider what he saith by his Spirit to this church, and to lay it deeply to heart for their instruction and admonition. The council which is given by Christ to one particular church, he requires and expects should be applied to all, and improved by all.
