Is Congress Like America?

description: (hide) Richard Ritenbaugh, referring to the movie musical 1776 in which southerner Dr. Lyman Hall(a representative from Georgia)who was torn by conscience, either voting as he believed or for the majority opinion of his district, ultimately voted his conscience, a position advocated by Edmund Burke. According to James Madison, a representative ought to be able to look after the long term interests of his country rather than his party’s point of view or the popular opinion. Today’s congressmen, unfortunately, do not look at the long term interests of their country, but are intent in ramming a ‘progressive’ socialist agenda down our throats. Senators and congressmen, with their patrician salaries (four times the average median salary), are hopelessly out of touch with the country. 264 of the senators and congressmen are lawyers, not exactly a mirror of American citizenry. The leaders of the people do not seem to have America’s interests at heart. We need to pray that they don’t lead us to complete destruction.
