description: (hide) Ted Bowling, acknowledging the upcoming observance of Mother’s Day, asks us to honor not only mothers, but also widows and orphans. The Bible is quite explicit about our duty to widows and orphans, who are generally thought to be the most vulnerable members of society. Ruth and Naomi were widows, and Boaz (a type of Christ) protected and honored them. Elijah gave special honor to a widow and was blessed for his kindness. The widow is granted special status as a didactic metaphor. As God has a special place in His heart for the vulnerable and the defenseless, so must we assume a similar role by visiting, defending, and helping the vulnerable among us. God desires that we be tenderhearted as He is tenderhearted.
