10. Hakkoz ] Called “Koz” in Ezr 2:61; Neh 3:4; Neh 3:21 (R.V. “Hakkoz” in all three places).

Abijah ] So Neh 10:7; Neh 12:4; Neh 12:17. Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, was of the course of Abiah (R.V. Abijah); Luk 1:5.

(10) Hakkoz.The thorn. (Comp. koz, thorn, 1Ch. 4:8.)

Abijah.Called Abia (Luk. 1:5). To this class or course of the priests belonged Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist.

Ver. 10. The eighth to Abijah. ] John Baptist’s father was of this course, Luk 1:5 but whether he were chief priest of this division, as also whether he were of the line of Eleazar, or of Ithamar, is uncertain. Old he was, Luk 1:7 and yet not freed from taking his turn. Dumb he was also for a time; and yet he went on to do his office in the ministration. The evangelist’s word, , Luk 1:5 importeth a daily attendance upon the work while the course continueth.

Abijah: As the Evangelist Luke mentions the course of Abia, it is evident that these courses of the priests, established by David, no doubt under Divine direction, were continued, with some alterations, till the days of Christ: these records must therefore have been very useful after the Babylonian captivity.
