And their windows, and their porches, and their palm trees, [were] after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up unto it by seven steps; and the porches thereof [were] before them.

22. The outer gate was elevated above the ground outside, and reached by a flight of seven steps.

arches thereof were before them ] Probably: and the porch thereof was to the inside, i.e. at the inner end of the gate, looking toward the interior of the whole temple-buildings, cf. Eze 40:31 ; Eze 40:34 ; Eze 40:37.

By seven steps: it is not said what number of stairs they went up to the east gate, but by this if appears they were seven steps in number, and it is said by some the form was semi-circular.

The arches thereof, of this portico, the curious vaulted roof.

Before them; within, or more inward than the steps or gate.

Eze 40:14, signifying that the light of the churches, their privileges, and flourishing condition, will be alike everywhere, as in one part of the world, so in another; see Isa 52:8:

and they went up unto it by seven steps; or stairs, Eze 40:6, the number of them is not there mentioned as here, but the same in both;

And they went up unto it by seven steps. ] Whereby was noted the saints’ progress in knowledge and holiness, Luk 17:5 Rom 1:17 Rev 22:11 still climbing up toward the heavenly temple. Psa 84:7

seven steps. These are the steps to the outer gates, and distinct from the “eight” of the inner court. Neither have anything to do with the fifteen steps of the “Songs of the Degrees”. See App-67.

before them: Or, “suitable to them,” that is, to the arches of the east gate. The north gate into the outward court, and every thing belonging to it, were exactly the same as the east gate.

Eze 40:22. Their windows means the windows of the preceding verse, and the arches were the porches or shaded covering over the windows. The dimensions of these parts were the same as those described in verse 16.
