Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Ezekiel 40:23

And the gate of the inner court [was] over against the gate toward the north, and toward the east; and he measured from gate to gate a hundred cubits.

23. Render: and there was a gate in the inner court, as Eze 40:27, lit the inner court had a gate, &c. For “and toward the east” LXX. reads: just as the gate looking toward the east ( Eze 40:19).

The gate, the north gate, of

the inner court, or court of the priests.

The gate toward the north; the north gate of the outer court, these were directly over each other.

And toward the east: it is concise, but thus to be expressed fully: The east gate of the inner court was directly over against the east gate of the outer court, and equally distant from each other.

23. and toward the eastanelliptical expression for “The gate of the inner court was overagainst the (outer) gate toward the north (just as the inner gate wasover against the outer gate) toward the east.”

And the gate of the inward court was over against the gate toward the north, and toward the east,…. Or, “and as to the east” h; that is, the north gate of the inner court was directly opposite to the north gate of the outward court; just as the eastern gate of the inward court was in a straight line opposite to the eastern gate of the outward court:

and he measured from gate to gate an hundred cubits; from the north gate of the outward court to the north gate of the inward court; and it was exactly of the same distance from one another as on the left side; see Eze 40:19.

Eze 40:23. Over against means it was opposite to the other gates In a way that caused the three to face each other. There was a considerable space taken up with this unit of the great structure, for it was 100 cubits or about 150 feet.

Eze 40:23. The gate of the inner court was over against the gate toward the north, &c. The words may be translated more intelligibly thus: And the gate of the inner court was proportionable, or answerable, to the gate that was toward the north and toward the east. The expression is elliptical, like that of Eze 40:19, and the full import of it is, that the north gate of the inner court did exactly answer this north gate of the outer court, described Eze 40:20; Eze 40:22. And in like manner the east gate of the inner court answered the east gate of the outward court.
