And also unto the Levites,…. Or with respect to them:

they shall no more carry the tabernacle: on their shoulders, from place to place, as they had done:

nor any vessels of it for the service thereof; and so the service of it did not require men at their full strength, but such as were but twenty years of age might be employed in it.

(26) And also unto the Levites; they shall no more carry . . .Rather, And the Levites also have not (now) to carry the dwelling and all its vessels for its service, as they had to do in the wanderings of Israel in the desert. The sacred dwelling-place (mishkn) had long been fixed at Gibeon; and the service of the Levites was so much the lighter, as in the olden time they not only had to carry about from place to place, but also to guard the holy tent and its belongings against the attacks of marauders. The inference is that as the duties had become so much less arduous, they might well be undertaken at an earlier age than the ancient custom permitted.

They shall no more carry.Comp. the same infinitival construction in 2Ch. 5:11.

The employment of the Levite, probably before the temple was built, had been accompanied with bodily exercise and labour: but now they are henceforth to minister only in holy things. Is not this a beautiful type of the gospel church? When Jesus, whom this temple represented, came in the fulness of grace and truth, his spiritual worship forever did away the shadow of service. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availed anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. Gal 6:15 .
