Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of 1 Chronicles 24:23

And the sons [of Hebron]; Jeriah [the first], Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth.

23. And the sons of Hebron] The text of this verse is mutilated, but it has been restored in A.V. (so also R.V.) from 1Ch 23:19.

Neither Hebron nor the first is found in the present Hebrew text; but they seem to have been rightly supplied by our translators from 1Ch 23:19. The four persons named appear to have been contemporaries of David, the heads of the Hebronite houses in his time (compare 1Ch 26:31).

The first; which word is fitly supplied both out of the rest of this verse, the second, third, and fourth having a manifest reference to the first, and out of 1Ch 23:19; 26:31, where it is expressed.

(23) And the sons of Hebron; Jeriah the first. The Hebrew text is here mutilated. Our translators have emended it from 1Ch. 23:19. The names of the houses or classes are given, without those of the heads.

Ver. 23. And the sons of Hebron. ] Hebron is not in the original, but well supplied out of 1Ch 23:19 ; 1Ch 26:31 . See the like lacuna in 1Ch 2:53 .

Jeriah. Some codices, with eight early printed editions, Septuagint, and Syriac, read “and the sons of Jeriah”, but the Ellipses are rightly supplied from Ch. 1Ch 23:19.
