The twelfth [captain] for the twelfth month [was] Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.

of Othniel ] Cp. Jdg 1:13; Jdg 3:9. Thus Heldai was not of pure Israelite descent, but belonged to the Kenizzites (Kenaz), a younger branch of the Calebites, who, it seems, were a tribe incorporated into Judah either shortly before or during the conquest of Canaan. Of Othniel.Of the clan so called. (Comp. Jos. 15:17.) His town was Netophah, near Bethlehem.
Of the whole list of twelve generals, it is noticeable that eightviz., the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth, tenth, and twelfthbelonged to the royal tribe of Judah. Of the remaining four, the second perhaps, and the ninth certainly, was a Benjamite; the seventh and eleventh were Ephraimites.
