And Kish [was] the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner [was] the son of Abiel.
51. Abiel ] It has been conjectured that Abiel is the same as Jehiel “the father” or founder of Gibeon, 1Ch 9:35, and that Gibeon is identical with Gibeah; but this is doubtful.

(51) The son of Abiel.For son the commentators mostly agree we must read sons. Kish and Ner, we know, were both sons of Abiel. (See 1Ch. 9:35-36, where, however, the fathers name is given as Jehiel.)

51. Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel From 1Ch 8:33, we learn that Ner was the father of Kish; so Abner and Kish were brothers, and Abiel, represented as the father of Kish in 1Sa 9:1,must be understood as a more remote ancestor.
