And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead,…. By his own hands, and not by the hands of the Amalekite, which the armour bearer would scarcely have suffered:
he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him; some think that Saul, and his armourbearer, died by the same sword, which was the armourbearer’s; and if he was Doeg, they fell probably by the same sword with which the priests of the Lord were murdered at Nob, 1Sa 22:18; and it is observed by an historian d, that the murderers of Julius Caesar slew themselves with the same dagger they destroyed him.

5. His armourbearer saw that Saul was dead He probably drew the sword from the body of the king and hoped to save him, but all too late.
He fell likewise upon his sword The same sword by which the Lord’s anointed had been slain. Touching and beautiful was this devotion of the faithful armourbearer to his king. It not only evidences the deep attachment of a true and tender heart, but also shows that Saul was not without a strong personal magnetism, which drew others to him, and kept them firmly there. At his public election at Mizpeh there clave to Saul a number of men whose hearts were touched by God, (1Sa 10:26,) and at no time during his reign did he want for attendants who were thus tenderly attached to his person and interests.

(5) And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
There is a tradition, that this armour-bearer was Doeg, the Edomite: and that Saul advanced him to this honour, for his killing the priests of the Lord. But this is not certain. The Reader would do well to recollect, what David prophesied concerning this man in Psa 52 .

1Sa 31:5. He (his armour-bearer) fell likewise upon his sword The same sword on which Saul had fallen, which was the sword of the armour- bearer. This will appear evident to any one that reads these two verses (the 4th and 5th) in the original. Now it is the established tradition of the Jewish nation, that this armour-bearer was Doeg, which is not at all unlikely; and if so, then both Saul and his executioner fell by that very weapon with which they had before massacred the priests of God!
