For Adullam see 1Sa 22:1 note. It was in the near neighborhood of Socoh Jos 15:35; but its site cannot be actually fixed. It was a place of great antiquity Gen 38:1.

He built even Bethlehem,…. The place of our Lord’s birth, about six miles from Jerusalem:

and Etam; another city in the tribe of Judah; see 1Ch 4:32, there was a rock of this name, Jud 15:8 and a fountain from whence waters were conveyed into the pool at Jerusalem, spoken of in Jewish writings b:

and Tekoah; of which place Amos the prophet was, and which was about twelve miles from Jerusalem. Rauwolff c speaks of it as a fortified place now; he says it has a strong and mighty castle, built on a great and high hill.

Beth-lehem.Beit-lahm, on a rocky eminence, two hours south of Jerusalem (Gen. 35:19; Mic. 5:2; Mat. 2:6). The birthplace of David and of Christ.

Etam.Ain Attn; different from the place mentioned in 1Ch. 4:32 and Jdg. 15:8, which lay in Simeonite territory.

Tekoa.Tekua; ruins on a hill two hours south of Bethlehem. (See Jos. 15:59, Note.)

6. Beth-lehem The city of David and of Christ. See on Rth 1:1; Mat 2:1.

Etam Identified by Dr. Robinson with the ruined village Urtas, about a mile south of Beth-lehem. Here he found “traces of an ancient site the foundations of a square tower, a low thick wall of large squared stones, rocks hewn and scarped, and the like.” Tobler, however, identifies Etam with Ain Attan, a little-south-west of Urtas. Comp. note on Jdg 15:8.

Tekoa Twelve miles south of Jerusalem. See on 2Sa 14:2. All three of these places are mentioned in the Septuagint version of Jos 15:59, but are wanting in the Hebrew text.

Bethlehem: Bethlehem, called Bethlehem Judah – Jdg 17:7, to distinguish it from another Bethlehem in Zebulun – Jos 19:15, and also Ephratah – i.e., fruitful and by the Arabs, Bait-el-lahm, is situated on a rising ground on the southern side of a deep and extensive valley, and reclining from e to w not quite six miles s of Jerusalem.
