The end of his reign. – 2Ch 28:27. Ahaz indeed both died and was buried in the city, in Jerusalem (as 2Ki 16:20), but was not laid in the graves of the kings, because he had not ruled like a king of the people of God, the true Israel. Since the name Israel is used in a pregnant sense, as in 2Ch 28:19, the terms in which the place where he died is designated, “in the city, in Jerusalem,” would seem to have been purposely selected to intimate that Ahaz, because he had not walked during life like his ancestor David, was not buried along with David when he died.

(26) Now the rest of his acts, and of all his ways. The chronicler has varied the usual formula. (See chapter 25:26, 26:7, &c., and comp. 2Ki. 16:19.)
But (for) they brought him not into the sepulchres of the kings of Israel.Wanting in Kings. (See Note on chaps, 21:20, 26:23.) Thenius supposes that this statement is founded either upon mistake, or upon zeal for the Law. But why not upon a written authority?

The mind feels relief when arriving at the close of such an history and such a character. I cannot dismiss the relation of this impious prince’s life without desiring the Reader to compare it with the seventh chapter of the prophecy of Isaiah; in the perusal of which he will discover, not only the graciousness of the Lord in sending to his people, even during the reign of so wicked a prince, a renewed instance of his love; but opening to the views of the faithful in Judah blessed intimations of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It forms a most precious consolation to everyone to consider that at a time when sin abounded grace did much more abound; for never during the Old Testament days were there afforded clearer promises concerning Jesus than the prophecy of Isaiah contained; and delivered at a time when the most daring rebellion against God marked both Israel and Judah.
