Then will I establish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man [to be] ruler in Israel.

Verse 18. There shall not fail thee a man] This promise was not fulfilled, because the condition was not fulfilled; they forsook God, and he cut them off, and the throne also.

(18) As I have covenanted with.Heb. kratt l, Icut (a covenant) for. The word brth, covenant, is omitted, as in 2Ch. 5:10. So LXX., . Syriac, As I sware to David. Kings: As I spake concerning David (kratt may be an ancient misreading of dibbart, I spake; the two being much alike in Heb. writing).

Ruler in Israel (mshl).Kings, From upon the throne of Israel. The chronicler has substituted a reminiscence of Mic. 5:1, probably correcting a defective text, the word throne having fallen out. Syriac, who standeth on the throne of Israel.
