But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work; but they [were] men of war, and chief of his captains, and captains of his chariots and horsemen.

9. and chief of his captains ] Read (with 1Ki 9:22) and his princes and his captains. The statements of this verse must be read in connexion with 1Ki 5:13 ff; 1Ki 12:4 ff., whence it appears that though Solomon did not actually reduce any Israelite to permanent slavery, yet he imposed upon his own people a corve which was felt to be very burdensome.

should be altered into as in 1Ki 9:22, for are not chariot combatants, but royal adjutants; see on Exo 14:7 and 2Sa 23:8. Over the statute labourers 250 upper overseers were placed. , chief of the superiors, i.e., chief overseer. The Keth. , praefecti , is the true reading; cf. 1Ch 18:13; 2Ch 17:2. The Keri has arisen out of 1Ki 9:23. These overseers were Israelites, while in the number 550 (1Ki 9:23) the Israelite and Canaanite upper overseers are both included; see on 2Ch 2:17. refers to , 2Ch 8:7, and denotes the Canaanite people who remained.
