So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite.

2. Ahinoam Abigail ] Cp. 1Sa 25:42-43. The Jezreel to which Ahinoam belonged was a city in the mountains of Judah near Carmel and Juttah.

and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail, Nabal’s wife, the Carmelite; who were beloved by him, and who had shared with him in his troubles, and which he took with him to partake of his honour and grandeur, wealth and riches; in which he was now a type of Christ. See Ro 8:17.

(2) So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal’s wife the Carmelite. (3) And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

Observe how a prudent man, not only attends to his own personal concerns, but to the concerns of his family. There is nothing said of his children, neither can we learn from the word of God whether David had any at this time. Indeed as his first born was born in Hebron, it should seem that this event took place after he came to the kingdom. See 2Sa 3:2 .

Ver. 2. And his two wives also. ] To take such part as himself, to share with him in his prosperity as they had done in his misery.
