A people great and tall,…. Of a large bulky size, and of an high stature, so that the spies seemed to be as grasshoppers to them, Nu 13:33,
the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest; by report, having had an account of them by the spies, who described them as very large bodied men, and of a gigantic stature, the descendants of one Anak, a giant; and so the Targum of Jonathan,
“a people strong and high like the giants;”
from these Bene Anak, children of Anak, or Phene Anak, as the words might be pronounced, the initial letter of the first word being of the same sound, Bochart z thinks the country had its name of Phoenicia:
and of whom thou hast heard say, who can stand before the children, of Anak? or the children of the giants, as the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan; which they had heard either from the spies who had suggested the same, Nu 13:31 or as a common proverb in the mouths of most people in those days.

(2) Whom thou knowest. The pronoun is emphatic. The twelve spies, two of whom were still living, had seen them (Num. 13:33), and their fame was doubtless notorious. It seems to have been a common saying, possibly among the Anakim themselves, Who will stand up to the children of Anak? No one could be found to face them.

Ver. 2. Who can stand before the children of Anak! The strength and valour of this people were so great, that they became proverbial. They were vanquished by Joshua, who made them flee to the Philistines, where, it should seem, a remnant of them lived till the time of David; for Goliah and his brethren appear to have been Anakims, 1Ch 20:6 being all born at Gath, whither the Anakims fled. 2Sa 21:22. Jos 11:22. Some critics think, that from the word Anak the Greeks derived their anax, or king, taken from the idea of the power and greatness of these men, some of whom, it is probable, passed into Greece when they were driven out of their own country by Joshua.

It is worthy observation, that Moses follows up the report of what the spies had said, concerning the Anakims, when they went up to the promised land: but with very different views. They did it through fear, and to discourage the people. Moses did it through faith, and to animate Israel. Great, and mighty, and formidable, as Israel’s enemies might be, the LORD of Hosts was mightier. And the more powerful their foes, the more evident would be their victory, in proof that the LORD was their GOD.
