Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Deuteronomy 9:9

Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Deuteronomy 9:9

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, [even] the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:

9. Based on Exo 24:13; Exo 24:15 a, Exo 24:18 b, E, Exo 34:28, J, this verse omits E’s reference to the elders and Aaron, Exo 24:14, and of course has no reference to the interlaced sentences of P, id. Exo 24:15 b Exo 24:18 a; to the tables of stone it adds even the tables of the covenant, etc. ( Deu 9:11 ; Deu 9:15: see Exo 4:13 and Exo 5:22 tables of stone only, and cp. Exo 5:2); the last fact, I did neither eat bread nor drink water, was either transferred by D from J’s story of Moses’ second ascent of the Mount, Exo 34:28; or was found by him in E’s story of the first ascent from which it has now disappeared. Cp. Mat 4:2.

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone,…. The tables of the law, the same law which forbid idolatry, and which they had lately heard from the mouth of God himself: even

the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you; which they had agreed unto, and solemnly promised they would observe and do, Ex 24:7,

then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights; and this long stay was one reason of their falling into idolatry, not knowing what was become of him, Ex 24:18.

I neither did eat bread nor drink water; all those forty days and nights, Ex 34:28.

9. When I was gone to receive the tables of stone How incisive these words of rebuke! At the time when Moses was occupied with the holiest of duties waiting to receive the tables of the law from Jehovah’s own hand, forgetful of himself, with no thought for his bodily wants even then the people are preparing for the worship of a golden calf! Their apostasy at such a time seems almost unaccountable.

Ver. 9. I neither did eat bread nor drink water Dr. Shaw observes, that “the eastern nations in general are great eaters of bread; it being computed that three persons in four live entirely upon it, or, at least, upon such compositions as are made of barley or wheat flour. Frequent mention is made of this simple diet in the Holy Scriptures; where the flesh of animals, though sometimes it may be included in the eating of bread, or making a meal, is not often recorded. See Gen 18:5; Gen 21:14. 1Sa 28:22.” Travels, vol. 1: p. 230.
