Any priest; any one, on any pretence.

Wine, or any other strong intoxicating liquor.

When they enter into the inner court; when they go, either to trim the lamps, or set the shew-bread in order, or to offer incense in the temple; or when they go to the altar to offer a sacrifice, which stood in the inner court: this prohibition you have Lev 10:9, which see, and it was to prevent all indecencies in the service.

Neither shall any priest drink wine,…. That is, to excess, immoderately, so as to be inebriated with it, Le 10:9, should not be given to it, and greedy of it, and drink it so as to disguise themselves: this is reckoned among the qualifications of a Gospel minister, 1Ti 3:3, otherwise it is not forbidden good men, or ministers of the word, to drink wine, for health’s sake, and for the refreshment of nature, provided it is done in moderation, 1Ti 5:23, and particularly care should be taken that they drink it in such a manner,

when they enter into the inner court: to attend divine service, since immoderate drinking affects the memory; and such may forget the law and doctrines of the Lord they are to deliver or hear; and may put them upon saying and doing that which is improper and indecent: drunkenness in any Christian professor is abominable, especially in a minister of the word; and when it appears in his ministration, it is scandalous to the last degree.

21. This was according to Lev 10:9. On ordinary occasions the Jews might drink wine in moderation. The Palestinian wine and the Hebrew temperament differed greatly from the American. There are no drunkards now in Palestine, and even in America it is almost an unheard-of thing for a Jew to give way to alcoholism.

Eze 44:21-23. Neither shall any priest drink wine when they enter into the inner court That is, during the time of their ministration: see the note on Lev 10:9-10, from whence this law is taken, and where the reason of it is given. Neither shall they take for their wives a widow This law we find Lev 21:13-14; but it there concerns only the high-priest, here it is applied to all the priests in general. And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, &c. Between good and evil, between what is lawful and what is unlawful; that they may neither scruple what is lawful, nor venture upon what is unlawful; that they may not pollute what is holy, nor pollute themselves with what is profane. Ministers should take pains to cause people to discern between the clean and the unclean, that they may not confound the distinctions between right and wrong, nor mistake concerning them, so as to put darkness for light, or light for darkness; but may have a well-informed judgment, especially in all matters of duty.

Moreover the priests were not to drink wine before they came into the inner court (cf. Lev 10:9), nor were they to marry a widow or a divorced woman. They could only marry virgin Israelite women or the widows of former priests. Under the Mosaic system these marrying restrictions bound only the high priest (cf. Lev 21:7; Lev 21:14), but under the millennial system they will apply to all Zadokite priests.
