And when he cometh, he findeth [it] swept and garnished.

25. swept and garnished ] The mischief and danger of the emancipated soul is that it is not occupied by a New Indweller. It has not tested the expulsive power of holy affections. It is ‘lying idle’ ( , Mat 12:44), i.e. ‘to let.’

And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. In Matthew it is also said to be “empty”; and so it is read here in the Arabic version; and in the Ethiopic version, “empty of men”: but rather the sense is, that he found it empty of all goodness, notwithstanding all the sweeping and garnish of an outward reformation. The Persic version renders it, “heated and prepared”; heated with wrath and fury against Christ, and his Gospel, and so was prepared and fitted to be a proper habitation for Satan; and in such a case as this was the Jewish nation from the time of Christ’s death to the destruction of Jerusalem; [See comments on Mt 12:44]

1) “And when he cometh, he findeth it swept,” (kai elthon heuriskei sesaromenon) “And when he came he found it had been swept,” cleansed. It was like whitewash on the cover of a poisoned well, a case of moral reformation, without regeneration, or the new birth, Joh 3:3; Joh 3:5; Tit 3:5.

2) “And garnished.” (kai kekosmemenon) “And that it had been furnished,” but empty, all dressed up, beautified, equipped, furnished, like Judas Iscariot, the Rich barn builder, and the rich man in hell, Luk 16:19-31.
