Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 11:50
That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;
Verse 50. That the blood] That the particle may be translated so that, pointing out the event only, not the design or intention, Bishop Pearce has well shown in his note on this place, where he refers to a like use of the word in Lu 9:45; Lu 14:10; Joh 10:17; Ro 5:20; Ro 11:11; 1Co 1:15; 1Co 1:31, &c.

50. all . . . required of thisgenerationAs it was only in the last generation of them that”the iniquity of the Amorites was full” (Ge15:16), and then the abominations of ages were at once completelyand awfully avenged, so the iniquity of Israel was allowed toaccumulate from age to age till in that generation it came to thefull, and the whole collected vengeance of Heaven broke at once overits devoted head. In the first French Revolution the same awfulprinciple was exemplified, and Christendom has not done with ityet.

That the blood of all the prophets,…. The same with “all the righteous blood”, or the blood of all the righteous men, in
Mt 23:35,
which was shed from the foundation of the world: for there were prophets from the beginning, which prophesied of Christ, Lu 1:70 and whose blood was shed very early; for Abel, the son of the first man, and who was the first whose blood was shed, was not only a righteous man, but a prophet; for by the sacrifice which he offered up, he gave a prophetical hint of the sacrifice of Christ, in that he spoke beforehand of it, as being dead he yet speaks: and now the Lord was about to send apostolical prophets, whom the Jews would slay, and he would suffer them to slay, that so the blood of all the former ones,
may be required of this generation; and they be punished for it: just as in Babylon will be found, when God makes inquisition for blood, as he sooner or later always does, the blood of the prophets and saints, and of all that are slain upon earth, ever since Rome papal has been in power, Re 18:24.

That … may be required ( … ). Divinely ordered sequence, first aorist passive subjunctive of , a late and rare verb outside of LXX and N.T., requiring as a debt the blood of the prophets.
Which was shed ( ). Perfect passive participle of and (an Aeolic form appearing in the margin of Westcott and Hort here, , present passive participle). If the present passive is accepted, it means the blood which is perpetually shed from time to time.
From the foundation of the world ( ). See also Matt 25:34; John 17:24; Eph 1:4, etc. It is a bold metaphor for the purpose of God.

Luk 11:50-51. That the blood of all the prophets, &c. “Hereby you will far exceed your fathers in extensive and outrageous instances of wickedness, which God will suffer you to commit, in defiance of greater mercies, and more evident means of conviction, than they ever enjoyed; that you may bring upon the present generation of the Jews, all the terrible wrath threatened and due for national guilt, inshedding the blood of the servants of God in former ages, from the beginning of the world, (Luk 11:51.) even from the blood of righteous Abel, which was shed by Cain on account of religion, and which cried aloud to heaven for vengeance, before the giving of the law, unto the blood of that well known Zacharias, under the law, whom your predecessors stoned to death in the court between the altar of burnt-offering and the temple, for reproving their idolatry, and who, when he died, said, The Lord look upon it, and require it: 2Ch 24:20-22. I assuredly tell you, that God, in his righteous judgment, will revenge all this blood upon the men of this generation, for their still more flagrant iniquity of the same kind, in the utter destruction of their city, temple, and nation.”
