For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

12. the Holy Ghost shall teach you ] A similar promise had been given to Moses, Exo 4:12-15; see Luk 21:15. For fulfilments of the promise, see Act 6:8; Act 6:10 (St Stephen); 2Ti 4:17 (St Paul), &c.

For the Holy Ghost shall teach you,…. Shall give both words and matter: in the same hour; instantly, immediately:

what ye ought to say; what will be proper to be said, for the honour of Christ, the defence of the Gospel, and the confusion of enemies; [See comments on Mt 10:20].

What ye ought to say ( ). Literally, what things it is necessary () to say. This is no excuse for neglect in pulpit preparation. It is simply a word for courage in a crisis to play the man for Christ and to trust the issue with God without fear.

1) “For the Holy Spirit shall teach you,” (to gar hazion pneuma didaksei humas) “For the Holy Spirit will teach you,” when you are in peril of danger, as Stephen at his stoning, Peter when before the Jerusalem council, and Paul ‘ when before Agrippa, Act 7:51-60; Act 4:18-20; Act 26:14-29.

2) “In the same hour what ye ought to say.” (en aute te hora ha dei eipen) “in the same hour (of your need) just what things you must say,” even as He spoke to Paul in the midst of a terrible storm at sea, while on His way to imprisonment in Rome, Act 6:10; Act 27:21-25; Exo 4:12; 1Pe 5:7.
