Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 23:19
(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
19. who ] The word implies ‘a man of such a kind, that, &c.’
and for murder ] “Ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you,” Act 3:14. Nothing is known of Bar-Abbas, but it has been conjectured from his name that he or his father belonged to the order of the Sanhedrists, who therefore desired his release. If he had been a follower of Judas of Galilee, or engaged in the riot against Pilate about his use of the Corban, he would enlist the sympathies of the people also.
Who, for a certain sedition made in the city,…. Of Jerusalem: he had made an insurrection in it, in opposition to the government, in order to have thrown off the yoke, and to have asserted and maintained their liberties, as a free people; or rather to have seized and plundered the properties of other people, since he is represented elsewhere as a robber:
and for murder; which had either been committed by himself, or his accomplices, in the insurrection; and for these things, sedition, and murder, he
was cast into prison; where he lay till this feast, in order to be executed.
Insurrection (). An old word for sedition, standing off, the very charge made against Jesus (and untrue). If Jesus had raised insurrection against Caesar, these accusers would have rallied to his standard. And for murder ( ). They cared nought for this. In fact, the murderer was counted a hero like bandits and gangsters today with some sentimentalists. Was cast ( ). Periphrastic aorist passive indicative of , a quite unusual form. Who [] . Classifying him. One of such a kind as that he had been imprisoned, etc.
1) “(Who for a certain sedition made in the city,” (hostis en dia stasin tina genomenen en te pole!) “Who was because of a certain insurrection that happened in the city,” of Jerusalem. Mat 17:16 describes Barabbas as a “notable prisoner.”
2) “And for murder, was cast into prison.)” (kai phonon bletheis en te phulake) “And because of murder he was thrown into the prison,” and being detained with the charges against him, beyond which no details are known; Mar 15:7 discloses that he had helped in an insurrection-and committed murder in the insurrection; and Joh 18:40 adds “Now Barabbas was a robber; The I priests chose Barabbas, a robber, a murderer, a seditionist, and an insurrectionist, while rejecting Jesus Christ, Joh 1:11-12.
(19) Who for a certain sedition.St. Lukes and St. Marks accounts agree more closely than the others. St. John alone speaks of Barabbas as a robber; St. Matthew merely calls him a notable prisoner.

Sedition is from the same word as “insurrection” in Mar 15:7. The meaning is an uprising against a legal government, of which Barabbas had been guilty.
