And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
40. and they could not ] Jesus afterwards, at their request, told them the reason of this, which was their deficient faith. Mat 17:19-21.

And I besought thy disciples,…. The nine disciples that were left behind, whilst Christ, and the other three, were gone up to the mountain:
to cast him out; the devil out of his child:

1) “And I besought thy disciples to cast him out;” (kai edeethen ton matheton sou hina ekbalosin auto) “And I begged your disciples that they might (would) expel it,” or drive it out of him,” Luk 9:1; Mat 17:16; Mar 9:18.
2) “And they could not.” (kai ouk edunethesan) “And they were not able to do it,” Mat 17:18; Mar 9:18; because of unbelief, uncertainty, or distrust, Mar 6:7; See also Mar 9:28-29. They had either lost their power to cast out demons or this demon had greater power than some others, Act 19:13-16.
