Verses 42, 43:

Naphtali was Jacob’s younger son by Bilhah. Jacob’s prophecy concerning him speaks of the eloquence in song that would come from his territory (Ge 49:21; Jg 4:6-9; 5:1-31).

53,400 men were counted in the census from this tribe.

‘Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go forth to war, those who were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.’

A similar mobilisation took place for the tribe of Naphtali, amounting to fifty three families/military officers and four ‘hundreds’ (men in four military units) ready for war.

Of the children. So in Authorized Version, and Revised Version, but not in Hebrew text, though it is so in some codices, Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Syriac, and Vulgate. Some Jewish commentators explain it as being only “the sons”, because Naphtali had more daughters than sons, and in Gen 49:51 is likened to a female (hind). Hence in Num 26:64 it is said, the “men” died (but the women multiplied).
