Surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers,…. Not possess and enjoy the land of Canaan, which the Lord by an oath had promised their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give it to their seed; and now he swears that these men, who had so often tempted him, and been disobedient to him, should not inherit it; so the Targums of Jonathan and Jerusalem take it for an oath; see Heb 3:11;
neither shall any of them that provoked me see it; that provoked him by the ill report they had brought of the land, by their unbelief, by their murmurings, and mutiny.

This is that memorable instance so pathetically mourned over in the New Testament, and so solemnly held up to our view to warn against the same dreadful example of unbelief. The apostle Paul dwells upon it very largely. 1Co 10:1-11 . And again: Heb 4:1-11 .

Surely
Kadesh-barnea is, by the unbelief of Israel there, and the divine comment on that unbelief Num 14:22-38; Deu 1:19-40; 1Co 10:1-5; Heb 3:12-19 invested with immense spiritual significance. The people had faith to sprinkle the blood of atonement Exo 12:28 and to come out of Egypt (the world), but had not faith to enter their Canaan rest. Therefore, though redeemed, they were a forty years’ grief to Jehovah. The spiritual application is made in Heb 6:3-11 :
