Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Numbers 2:5
And those that do pitch next unto him [shall be] the tribe of Issachar: and Nethaneel the son of Zuar [shall be] captain of the children of Issachar.
5, 7. Issachar is said to ‘pitch next unto’ Judah, and similarly in the other three cases. The important tribe thus appears to be placed in the centre, between the other two.

And those that do pitch next unto him [shall be] the tribe of Issachar,…. Who with Zebulun, after mentioned, as placed with him under the same standard, were the brethren of Judah, by the same mother Leah, and so fitly put together, as most likely to continue in harmony and love; and being the youngest sons of Leah, and brethren of Judah, would, without any reluctance or murmuring, pitch under their elder brother’s standard:
and Nethaneel, the son of Zuar, [shall be] captain of the children of Issachar; see Nu 1:8.

5. Issachar was encamped next to Judah on one side, and Zebulun was probably on the other. By arranging them thus the standard of Judah would be in the centre of the line, and opposite to the door of the tabernacle, and very near to the marquee of Moses, the commander in chief under Jehovah. An inspection of the annexed diagram will show the post of honour for Judah.

I only beg to detain the Reader, with general observations on those verses, because the leading doctrine of each belongs equally to all. The order observed in those appointments, manifests the Lord to be a God of order. And as it is he which hath fixed the bounds of our habitation, what a precious thought it is, in particular hours, when the mind is full of fear, lest being found out of the way, that, as Job saith, he knoweth the way that I take. Job 23:10 . Let the Reader, who contemplates in this view of Israel, the privilege of the Lord’s people, in having their standards near the tabernacle, contemplate at the same time, the greater privilege of those around whom the Lord himself encampeth, and defendeth them. Psa 34:7 .
