Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Numbers 26:58

These [are] the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korathites. And Kohath begot Amram.

58. It is not here stated to which of the three families of Num 26:57 these five branches of the Levites belonged. (This is done in Exo 6:16-21. Libnites belonged to Gershon; Hebronites and Korahites to Kohath; Mahlites and Mushites to Merari.) The verse appears to be separate from Num 26:57, and to be derived from a different source.

The families of the Levites are here numbered by themselves, because they were not to have a distinct share of the land, whence it is that they are not so distinctly and exactly mentioned as the other tribes, but confusedly and imperfectly, some of them being wholly omitted here. See Exo 6:17-19.
