For ye rebelled against my commandment in the desert of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the water before their eyes: that [is] the water of Meribah in Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.
14. because ye acted unfaithfully against my word ] The verb is characteristic of P . It is different from that in Num 20:24. And see note on Num 20:10-11.
in the strife to sanctify me ] The same play on the words Meribah (‘strife’) and Kadesh (‘sacred’) as in Num 20:3; Num 20:13. The words ‘to sanctify me’ (cf. Num 20:12) are connected with ‘my word,’ i.e. my commandment. Ye rebelled against the command which I gave you to vindicate my holiness by speaking to the rock.

For ye rebelled against my commandment the desert of Zin,…. Both Moses and Aaron, which was the reason why they were not suffered to go into the land of Canaan, but died a little before the children of Israel came into it: what their sin was, called here a rebelling against the commandment of the Lord; [See comments on Nu 20:12], and is next suggested:
in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me before their eyes; when the congregation of Israel strove against the Lord for want of water, they did not sanctify the Lord by believing in him; but expressed some degree of diffidence before the congregation about fetching water out of the rock, or questioning whether the Lord would give it to such a rebellious people, though they had his order for it:
that is the water of Meribah in Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; so called to distinguish it from another Meribah, or water of strife, at Rephidim, Ex 17:7.

14. For ye rebelled In Num 20:12 (see note) the charge against Moses and Aaron is, “Ye believed me not.” The passages are in perfect harmony, for unbelief is the root of all disobedience. See , translated by unbelief in Rom 11:30; Rom 11:32; Heb 4:6; Heb 4:11; and by disobedience in Eph 2:2; Eph 5:6; Col 3:6.

Moses, though faithful as a servant in GOD’S house, yet partook of the same infirmity as all the race of Adam, concerning whom it is said, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” How sweet again, under this view, is the recollection of thy immaculate, spotless, holiness, dearest JESUS! who, though taking upon thee our sinless infirmities, didst not take any of our impurities, but wast holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. Heb 7:26 . Reader! do not overlook, in this place, the manifestation that is here made of the holiness of JEHOVAH: the LORD will not suffer the smallest taint of sin to go unnoticed in his servants. how often is this offence of Moses mentioned: and how is it handed down through all ages of his church! Think, therefore, what a holy jealous GOD we have to do with, who will be sanctified in all who approach him; and in the death of his only begotten SON hath given such an awful demonstration of his holiness.
