Unto Machir, i.e. not to Machir himself, who doubtless was long since dead; see Gen 1:23; but the family or posterity of Machir, which are called by their fathers name; as the names of Abraham, Act 7:16; of Isaac, Amo 7:9; of Jacob or Israel frequently; of Judah and Simeon, Jdg 1:3; of David, 1Ki 12:16; are manifestly put for their posterity.

And Moses gave Gilead unto Machir the son of Manasseh,…. That is, to the children of Machir, who went and took it; though some say, as Aben Ezra observes, that Machir himself was now alive, and that it was given to him, but that is not probable; for, supposing him to be living when the children of Israel came out of Egypt, all that came from thence, who were twenty years old and upwards, died in the wilderness, excepting two, see Nu 32:11,

and he dwelt therein; that is, the family of the Macharite; see

Nu 26:29.

Num 32:40. Moses gave Gilead unto Machir i.e. to the family or posterity of Machir, as appears from the 1st verse; for Machir himself, being the son of Manasseh, must have been dead long ago. To this family Moses gave Gilead, i.e. half of mount Gilead; for the other half was given to the sons of Reuben and Gad: Deu 3:12-13. Houbigant understands Gilead to mean, not the country, but the city so named, which was the capital of the country, and which, he thinks, appears evidently to have been a city, from the words and took it, Num 32:39 which, in the 41st and 42nd verses, are applied to the taking of cities, not countries.

Num 32:40; Num 32:42. Moses gave Gilead unto Machir Not to Machir himself, who doubtless was long since dead, but the family or posterity of Machir. Nobah Who, though not elsewhere named, was doubtless an eminent person of the tribe of Manasseh. It is observable, that these tribes, as they were placed before the other tribes, so they were displaced before them. They were carried captive by the king of Assyria, some years before the other tribes. Such a proportion does Providence frequently observe in balancing prosperity and adversity.
