23. In the resurrection therefore ] Their difficulty originated entirely in a carnal notion that the connections of this life must be continued in another.

Verse 23. When they shall rise] This clause is wanting in BCDL, four others, Syriac, later Arabic, later Persic, Coptic, Saxon, and two of the Itala. Griesbach leaves it doubtful.

In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise,…. This last clause, “when they shall rise”, is omitted in two copies of Beza’s, and in the Syriac, Arabic, Persic, and Ethiopic versions, because, perhaps, it might be thought superfluous; but this is agreeably to the way of speaking and writing with the Jews: so in the Targum on Zec 3:7: , “in the quickening of the dead I will quicken thee”; or, in the resurrection of the dead I will raise thee. The question put on supposition of a resurrection, and that these seven brethren, and the wife they all had should rise, then is,
whose wife shall she be of them? of the seven brethren;
for the seven had her to wife. She was, according to law, the lawful wife of all seven; what particular and special claim could one have to her above the rest? [See comments on Mt 22:28].

To wife (). Predicate accusative in apposition with “her” (). So Luke, but Matthew merely has “had her” ( ), constative aorist indicative active.

1) “In the resurrection therefore,” (en te anastasei) “Now in the resurrection,” which you claim will take place for every man, which we do not believe in, Act 23:8.
2) “When they shall rise,” (hotan anastosin) “When she and they all rise,” are caused to come forth out of and from the dead, as you allege or teach, Joh 5:28-29; Joh 6:39-40; 1Co 15:52.
3) “Whose wife shall she be of them?” (tinos auton estai gune) “Which of them will have her as a wife in the resurrection?” It is a common quirk of a wicked mind to fabricate or invent an excuse for embracing a moral, ethical, or doctrinal error, Joh 3:19-20.
4) “For the seven had her to wife.” (hoi gar hepta eschon auten gunaika) “Because all the seven had her as a wife,” while she was living? Mat 22:28; Luk 20:33. In their conniving effort of fabrication and general collusion to trap Jesus as a breaker of Moses’ Law, these Sadducees really set a net for themselves.
