Exegetical and Hermeneutical Commentary of Luke 22:57
And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
57 . Woman, I know him not ] “nor do I understand what you mean,” Mar 14:68. The ‘Woman!’ should come last. Peter who has been described as ‘ homalos anomalon ’ or ‘consistently inconsistent’ shewed just the same kind of weakness many years later. Gal 2:12-13.
Verse 57. And he denied him] See the notes on Mt 26:58; Mt 26:69, &c. And he denied him, saying, woman, I know him not. Startled at the maid’s positive assertion, and knowing not how to clear himself any other way, roundly, and at once, denied that Jesus was his master; or that he was a disciple of his; or that he knew any thing of him, or had any acquaintance with him: and thus he that had said he would die with him, rather than deny him, is frighten at a servant maid, and denies him upon the first attack upon him.
I know him not ( ). Just as Jesus had predicted that he would do (Lu 22:34).
1) “And he denied him, saying,” (ho de ernesato legon) “And he denied him (Jesus) repeatedly saying,” before them all, all the servants of the high priest, among whom he stood and sat by the fire, Mat 26:70; Mar 14:68. This is his first denial.
2) “Woman, I know him not.” (ouk oida auton gunai) “Woman, I do not know him,” recognize Him, or perceive who the man is, Mat 26:70. Joh 18:17 also discloses that he even denied being one of His disciples. So Peter denied two things: 1) Even knowing Jesus, 2) or being one of His disciples, even being an apostle or member of His church. Let each of us: “Beware of Peter’s words, nor confidentially say, I’ll never deny my Lord, but trust I never may.”
‘But he denied, saying, “Woman, I know him not.” ’
Looking the woman straight in the eye he declared that what she had said was not true, and that the real truth was that he did not know the man at all. She was quite mistaken.
57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
